Important to Strike a Balance with Greater Contestation of Ideas: DPM Wong

DPM Lawrence Wong emphasizes the challenge of policy-making in an environment of increased political contestation.

Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the increasing difficulty of crafting policies that satisfy everyone, highlighting the need for trade-offs and balance in decision-making. Speaking at the Reinventing Destiny conference on August 14, 2023, Wong noted the growing contestation of ideas within Singapore’s political landscape, particularly regarding new policies.

As the leader of the fourth-generation team of the People’s Action Party (PAP), Wong explained that his approach to policy development is centered on what is in the best long-term interest of Singapore, which requires not just careful thought, but the ability to persuade others that these policies are the right course of action.

Wong responded to questions about whether Singapore might be tempted to adopt populist policies, citing the widespread availability of information today that often places pressure on governments to be more responsive. He acknowledged that political contestation is increasing but asserted that the PAP must reflect, learn, and grow stronger from setbacks.

The DPM also addressed the issue of building and sustaining trust, both domestically and internationally. He noted that Singapore’s consistent, principled, and credible actions contribute to trust-building, ensuring that citizens from all backgrounds benefit from the nation’s success. Wong reaffirmed the government’s efforts to review policies, including the Forward Singapore initiative, to strengthen trust and inclusion within society.

Addressing the issue of migrant workers, Wong stated that while Singapore treats its migrant workers well compared to other nations, there is a need to balance integration with respect for their contributions. He assured that improvements to their living conditions would continue, and emphasized the importance of Singaporeans’ support in integrating these workers.

Lastly, on the global stage, Wong discussed the challenges posed by US-China tensions, noting that while China faces economic struggles, including issues in the property sector, the country remains determined to strengthen its global standing despite external challenges.
