Concerns raised over presidential hopeful’s posts involving “pretty girls”
The Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) issued a clarification on August 21, 2023, regarding the eligibility of presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian. The PEC emphasized that it was unaware of Tan’s social media posts, which included mentions of his encounters with “pretty girls” in Singapore. These posts, primarily shared on Facebook, were brought to public attention after a TikTok video featuring screenshots of the posts went viral.
Tan, the former NTUC Income chief, defended his posts, stating that while a “small minority” may find them uncomfortable, the majority enjoy them. However, the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) raised concerns over his behavior, accusing him of objectifying women based on his past posts. Aware also questioned the PEC’s decision to grant Tan a certificate of eligibility, expressing concern that his views might be considered acceptable for a potential presidential candidate.
The PEC clarified that it does not review every applicant’s past social media activity before granting the certificate, unless such posts are specifically brought to its attention. Once the certificate is issued, the committee is not legally entitled to revisit its decision. However, any new information that surfaces after the certificate is issued is for the electorate to consider when voting on September 1, 2023.
