President Tharman takes office with a focus on unity and inclusivity

PM Lee highlights his vital role in Singapore’s future

Singapore’s newly inaugurated President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, has taken on the role with a firm commitment to fostering national unity and inclusivity. During his swearing-in ceremony at the Istana on September 14, 2023, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized the importance of President Tharman’s leadership in maintaining Singapore’s cohesion amid an increasingly uncertain global landscape.

PM Lee underscored that the presidency requires an individual with the right experience, values, and character. He praised President Tharman’s distinguished career in public service, spanning over two decades in key government roles. He also highlighted that Tharman’s overwhelming electoral victory—securing 70.41% of the vote—reflects the trust Singaporeans have in his ability to unite the nation.

One of the key takeaways from this election, according to PM Lee, was the reduced role of race as a deciding factor. The resounding support for Tharman, a member of a minority community, demonstrated Singaporeans’ commitment to meritocracy and national unity.

Beyond unity, President Tharman assumes two other significant responsibilities: safeguarding Singapore’s financial reserves and representing the country on the global stage. PM Lee expressed full confidence in Tharman’s ability to manage the nation’s reserves, citing his vast experience in economic and financial affairs. He also noted that Tharman’s extensive international background positions him well to strengthen Singapore’s diplomatic ties.

The president has pledged to advance social cohesion through initiatives in sports, the arts, and community programs. His vision includes support for underprivileged youth, mental health advocacy, and initiatives to assist caregivers and the elderly. Tharman believes these efforts will deepen social respect and reinforce Singapore’s collective resilience.

PM Lee assured that the government will work closely with President Tharman to achieve these goals, ensuring a continued focus on stability, inclusivity, and prosperity for all Singaporeans.
