Overcoming Challenges in Grid Implementation for Regional Energy Integration
The ASEAN power grid presents Singapore with a unique opportunity to become the region’s clean energy trading hub, particularly as the country navigates the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The city-state is poised to leverage its strong trade infrastructure to handle and trade clean energy, including renewable electrons and hydrogen.
However, the establishment of this power grid comes with significant technical and financial hurdles. One major challenge is the uneven distribution of renewable energy resources across the region, from solar and wind to hydro, which requires effective grid interconnection to optimize the use of green energy.
Experts, such as Sharad Somani, ESG head at KPMG Singapore, highlight the need for ASEAN nations to connect their electricity grids to ensure efficient green power distribution. While the potential for clean energy trading is considerable, the realization of a fully operational ASEAN power grid will require overcoming these complex challenges.
