Leader-in-Waiting Lawrence Wong Talks About His Commitment to Singapore’s Future Leadership
After 25 years of public service, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has pledged his full commitment to taking on the role of Singapore’s next Prime Minister, describing the responsibility ahead as “the biggest of all.” Speaking at the People’s Action Party (PAP) Awards and Convention on November 5, Wong acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead for both the party and the nation.
Wong emphasized that the PAP’s continued success depends on securing the support of the people in future general elections. While the party has won every election since 1959, Wong made it clear that they cannot take voter support for granted. “We can easily lose the next election,” he warned, urging the party to stay focused and ready for the next phase of Singapore’s growth.
Wong, who has been preparing for the leadership transition, reflected on his readiness to take the baton from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, acknowledging the urgency of the transition as the “runway is short.” He assured the public of his dedication to giving his best for the country, committing his “heart and soul” to the role.
As the country faces growing uncertainties and evolving political dynamics, Wong highlighted the stakes for Singapore. He pointed out that both international investors and other nations are closely watching Singapore’s political stability. Domestically, he acknowledged the increasing desire for more opposition voices in Parliament, calling it a healthy demand for diverse perspectives. However, Wong also emphasized the need for the PAP to continue engaging with Singaporeans to retain their trust.
In his approach to leadership, Wong stressed the importance of finding common ground among Singaporeans and ensuring that the benefits of progress are shared by all. His focus will be on making decisions that are in the best interest of the nation, even when those decisions may be tough. His leadership, he assured, would always be rooted in transparency, open dialogue, and a commitment to social harmony.
