Singapore Delays Convening Electoral Boundaries Review Committee for Next Election

No Immediate Announcement on Formation of EBRC

The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC), responsible for determining electoral boundaries for upcoming general elections, has not yet been convened, as confirmed by Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing on February 6, 2024, representing Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Timelines and Preparedness
The EBRC was last convened in August 2019, prior to the July 2020 general election. Chan reassured that there will be adequate time for political parties and candidates to prepare after the release of the committee’s report.

In response to Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam’s query about the announcement of the EBRC’s formation, Chan emphasized that the committee should work independently, away from public or media scrutiny.

Committee’s Approach to Boundary Changes
Regarding whether the EBRC will explain the reasons behind every boundary change, Chan clarified that the committee, comprising experts in population shifts and housing developments, independently considers the relevant data and does not find it practicable to explain every detail of its recommendations. The focus remains on ensuring fair representation and considering population shifts.
