Founders of Daycare Centre for Kids with Critical Illnesses Jointly Named ST Singaporean of the Year 2023

Ronita Paul and Geraldine Lee’s dedication to providing support to children with critical illnesses is honoured

Ronita Paul, a former nurse, and Geraldine Lee, a volunteer coordinator, were jointly named The Straits Times Singaporean of the Year 2023 for their work in founding the Arc Children’s Centre. The centre, which provides daycare and emotional support for children battling cancer and other critical illnesses, has been a beacon of hope since its establishment in 2011.

Their journey began when Paul met a 14-year-old boy at Assisi Hospice who was receiving pain management while his parents worked. His wish for a place where children in similar situations could find support inspired Paul to open the Arc Children’s Centre, where she was later joined by Lee. The pair received their award from President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, acknowledging their exceptional service to the community.

Paul expressed deep appreciation for the families who trusted them with the care of their children, remarking that their efforts, though modest, have a lasting impact on the children’s lives. The award, which comes with a trophy and S$20,000, highlights their selfless contributions and serves as an inspiration for others to make a difference, regardless of age or experience.
