Trade and Industry Minister to Deepen Bilateral Ties with Commemorative Activities and Business Engagements
Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong will be visiting the United States and Canada from April 28 to May 3, 2024, as part of efforts to strengthen ties and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA). This landmark agreement, which has bolstered economic and commercial relations between the two countries since its enactment in 2004, has seen bilateral trade in goods nearly triple over the past two decades.
During his visit, Gan Kim Yong will attend a commemorative reception co-hosted with the US-Asean Business Council in Washington, DC from April 28 to May 1. A key highlight of his visit will be co-chairing a USSFTA joint committee meeting with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, where they will review the implementation of the agreement and discuss future cooperation.
Additionally, Gan will meet with various US officials, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and members of Congress, as well as private-sector representatives. He will also participate in a fireside chat at the Economic Club of Washington DC, where he is expected to address international and regional economic developments and explore future collaboration between the US and Singapore.
From May 2 to 3, Gan will travel to Ottawa, Canada, where he will engage with Canadian officials such as Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Mary Ng and Minister of Small Business Rechie Valdez. He will also connect with the Canadian business community. On May 3, he is expected to meet Singapore companies in New York before returning to Singapore.
