Singapore and Malaysia: Strengthening Ties and Exploring New Opportunities

PM Wong Highlights Commitment to Resolving Bilateral Issues and Pursuing New Initiatives

During his first official visit to Malaysia as Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong affirmed Singapore’s commitment to continuing the strategic approach in its relationship with Malaysia while embracing new possibilities for collaboration. Speaking alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at a joint press conference on June 12, Wong emphasized the importance of resolving longstanding bilateral issues and exploring new avenues for cooperation.

Among the significant areas of discussion were the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and contentious matters such as water supply, airspace, and maritime boundaries. Both leaders expressed their determination to tackle these issues constructively, aiming to strengthen the friendship between their countries. Prime Minister Anwar highlighted that both leaders were committed to resolving these matters in the spirit of cooperation and mutual benefit.

Wong and Anwar also discussed broader opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as health, education, trade, investments, and the emerging digital economy and renewable energy fields. Notable projects like the Johor-Singapore SEZ and the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link were highlighted as promising areas for boosting cross-border flow of people, goods, and investments, which would benefit both nations.

The leaders also explored innovative ideas for strengthening ties, such as the possibility of Singapore sending teachers to various regions in Malaysia to teach English and other subjects. Both PM Wong and Anwar agreed on the importance of engaging not only government officials but also the private sector, NGOs, civil society, universities, and teachers to find ways to bring their countries closer together.
