Singapore Orders Social Media Sites to Block 95 Accounts Under Foreign Interference Law

Government takes action against coordinated online campaign targeting Singapore’s leadership and sovereignty.

In a historic move, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ordered five major social media platforms to block 95 accounts linked to Guo Wengui, a self-exiled Chinese businessman and critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). These accounts have been accused of spreading false allegations, including claims that Singapore is controlled by China.

The blocked accounts, tied to Guo’s affiliates such as the New Federal State of China and the Himalaya Supervisory Organisation, posted more than 120 videos targeting Singapore’s leadership transition, which culminated in Lawrence Wong becoming Prime Minister. The Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Act (Fica) was used to address these hostile information campaigns.

The move marks Singapore’s first use of Fica to combat foreign influence through social media, underscoring the country’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty against external interference.
