‘Not Overly Generous’ Jobseeker Support to Primarily Aid Lower-Income Workers, Say Observers

More Attention Needed for Middle-Income and Older Workers, Experts Suggest

Observers have noted that the newly introduced SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme, which is set to aid involuntarily unemployed workers, is primarily focused on helping lower-income individuals. While the scheme is seen as a step forward, its payouts are considered modest, particularly when compared to international standards for replacement income schemes aimed at middle-income workers.

Labour economist Associate Professor Walter Theseira commented that the payouts are relatively low for middle-income workers, as the scheme’s design and quantum are more tailored to support lower-income groups.

Further discussions have raised concerns about whether middle-income and older workers will receive adequate support under the current structure. Observers have suggested that additional measures may be needed to address the specific challenges faced by these groups in the evolving job market.

Additionally, there are calls for clarification on whether workers can benefit simultaneously from both the new SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme and the existing SkillsFuture Mid-Career Training Allowance.
