Built Environment Sector Can Learn from Accountancy to Attract More Architects and Engineers

Higher wages and better workplace practices could help address talent shortages

Singapore’s built environment sector faces a growing shortage of architects and engineers, prompting a new task force to explore solutions. Announced on September 4, 2024, by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, the Taskforce for Architectural and Engineering Consultants will assess how to make the industry more appealing to young professionals.

A key concern is whether remuneration in architecture and engineering is competitive enough compared to other fields. The accounting sector, which previously faced similar recruitment challenges, successfully implemented reforms to improve wages and workplace conditions—a model that could inspire changes in the built environment industry.

Beyond salaries, industry leaders also emphasize the importance of modernizing workplace practices, keeping pace with advancements in technology, and enhancing career development opportunities to retain top talent.
