Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng respond to ‘libellous’ claims.
Singapore’s Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng have announced legal action against Bloomberg and other media outlets over what they describe as libellous statements regarding their property transactions.
Legal Action Against Bloomberg
The dispute stems from a Dec 12 Bloomberg article titled “Singapore mansion deals are increasingly shrouded in secrecy”. The piece discussed Good Class Bungalow (GCB) transactions and was later republished by The Online Citizen and The Edge.
In identical Facebook posts on Dec 16, both ministers stated:
The article contained false and defamatory claims.
They are issuing letters of demand after consulting legal advisors.
Legal action may be taken against other media outlets that published similar allegations.
Bloomberg’s Response
Bloomberg has declined to comment on the matter, according to The Straits Times. The original article compiled data on GCB transactions from January to early December 2024, using information from Bloomberg News and List Sotheby’s International Realty.
This legal dispute highlights the sensitivity of real estate deals in Singapore and the government’s firm stance against misinformation.
