No immediate need for extra restrictions on travellers from China, but variant concerns remain

Experts urge vigilance amid China’s Covid-19 reopening

SINGAPORE: As China lifts its strict Zero Covid policies and prepares to reopen its borders, concerns have arisen about a surge in Covid infections and the potential emergence of new variants. However, experts in Singapore have stated that additional restrictions for travellers from China are unnecessary at this time.

Current entry requirements, including mandatory vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test, remain sufficient, according to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Singapore Airlines (SIA) has also confirmed that it does not plan to implement additional measures but will follow local health regulations.

High vaccination rates and low risk
Singapore’s high vaccination rate and previous experience managing significant case waves provide strong immunity levels across the population. Infectious disease experts, including Paul Tambyah, President of the International Society of Infectious Diseases, highlight that infection rates in China are comparable to those in countries like Germany and the United States.

Alex Cook, Vice-Dean of Research at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, noted that Singapore had handled tens of thousands of daily cases earlier this year without overwhelming the healthcare system. He suggested that the arrival of travellers from China would likely have minimal impact on local epidemiology.

Monitoring for variants
Despite current confidence, experts remain vigilant about the potential emergence of new Covid-19 variants from China’s ongoing wave of infections. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung emphasised the importance of monitoring mutations closely, particularly given China’s large, largely uninfected population of 1.3 billion.

SIA’s response
SIA reassured customers of its commitment to health and safety, detailing measures such as enhanced cleaning protocols and minimal contact innovations. The airline reiterated that it would align its policies with local health authorities and provide travellers with updated entry requirements via its travel information centre.

China’s reopening challenges
China’s recent relaxation of stringent Covid-19 measures has led to a significant rise in cases, sparking concerns worldwide. While data on the situation remains uncertain, Singapore continues to watch developments closely, ensuring preparedness for any potential changes in the global Covid-19 landscape.
