Public Urged to Buy Medicines Responsibly Amid High Demand

MOH Calls for Prudence in Medication Purchases to Avoid Shortages

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Health (MOH) has advised the public to purchase medicines—especially paediatric medications—only in quantities sufficient for personal use. This guidance aims to minimise wastage and ensure fair access during a period of heightened demand for over-the-counter medications to treat fever, cough, and cold.

Rising Demand Strains Supplies
Retailers and pharmacies have reported increased demand for medications, driven by both local consumption and overseas requests. Some pharmacies, including Watsons, have introduced limits on purchases, such as a six-unit cap on Panadol products. Watsons Head of Marketing, Lai Mei Ling, attributed this spike in demand to a mix of local needs and overseas buyers.

Stock levels at some outlets, particularly in areas like Chinatown, have been depleted, with reports of Chinese nationals purchasing flu medications to send back home amidst COVID-19 surges in China. Courier companies have also restricted the number of medicine boxes allowed per shipment due to high demand.

MOH Recommends Alternatives
MOH emphasised that pharmacies carry a variety of brands, including effective generic options, and advised the public to consider alternatives if preferred brands are unavailable. The ministry reassured Singaporeans that it is monitoring the situation closely and collaborating with pharmacies to ensure sufficient stock.

Background: China’s COVID-19 Surge
China’s recent easing of its zero-COVID policy has led to a significant rise in cases and shortages of flu medications. This development has prompted Chinese nationals in Singapore to send medical supplies back home. The situation underscores the need for responsible purchasing to maintain local supply levels.

Key Message
The MOH reminds everyone to buy medicines prudently to ensure access for all and to avoid unnecessary waste.
