Rare Weather Phenomenon Seen as a Symbol of the Queen and Prince Philip’s Legacy
A double rainbow appeared over Buckingham Palace in London, shortly after a heavy downpour, just before the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s death on September 9 (Singapore time). The rainbow, visible to crowds gathered outside the palace, seemed to serve as a poignant moment in history, as the Queen had passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
The Queen’s passing was confirmed at 1:30 am (Singapore time) on September 9, following news that she had been placed under medical supervision on the evening of September 8. Just before the announcement, the rainbow was spotted, catching the attention of those waiting for updates on her health. ITV News correspondent Romilly Weeks shared an image of the rainbow opposite Buckingham Palace, unaware at the time that the Queen had already passed.
The rainbow could be seen across London, with notable landmarks such as Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and the Queen Victoria Memorial also in view. There were also reports of a rainbow over Windsor Castle. Many commented that the double rainbow symbolised the Queen and her late husband, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, creating an emotional moment of reflection for the nation.
