RTS Link to Strengthen Singapore-Johor Ties, Says Iswaran

Improved Connectivity Expected with the Completion of Rapid Transit System

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link will significantly enhance the connectivity between Singapore and Johor, fostering closer ties between the two regions, according to Singapore’s Transport Minister, S Iswaran. This statement was made following his visit to the Woodlands North terminus site on July 21, where he hosted Sultan Ibrahim of Johor.

The RTS Link, which began construction in March 2021, is a 4km rail shuttle connecting Singapore’s Woodlands North station with Malaysia’s Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru. The system, expected to commence operations by the end of 2026, will cater to up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with the journey time between the two stations taking only about five minutes.

During the visit, Sultan Ibrahim witnessed the rock removal process, which is part of the ongoing work at the site, and was briefed on the marine piling works that are laying the foundation for the RTS Link’s viaduct. The viaduct, crossing the Straits of Johor at a height of approximately 25 metres, will link to underground tunnels leading to Woodlands North station.

In a Facebook post, Minister Iswaran noted that the RTS Link would strengthen Singapore and Johor’s relationship and presented the Sultan with a commemorative memento symbolising the collaboration between both sides in designing the viaduct.

National Development Minister Desmond Lee echoed these sentiments, expressing his enthusiasm for the RTS Link’s opening, which he believes will further connect the people of both regions. Later in the day, Sultan Ibrahim visited Sembawang Air Base, where he was briefed on the Republic of Singapore Air Force and had the opportunity to view a CH-47F helicopter.

Sultan Ibrahim’s visit to Singapore underscores the longstanding and warm bilateral relations between Singapore and Malaysia.
