Dry and Windy Start to New Year: Moderate Showers Expected Later

Singapore set for contrasting weather conditions in early January

Dry, Windy Weekend Ahead
Singapore is set to experience dry and windy conditions in the first weekend of the new year, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore (Met Service). These conditions are attributed to strong north-easterly winds driven by a high-pressure system over northern Asia, which is expected to persist into January 2023.

With the rain band positioned away from the region during this period, the island and its vicinity will see reduced rainfall accompanied by stronger winds.

Thundery Showers for the Fortnight
From the second week of January, moderate to heavy thundery showers are expected over parts of the island, especially in the afternoons. On some days, the showers may extend into the evening. Despite the fluctuating weather, rainfall levels for the first half of January are predicted to be near average.

Temperatures will range between 24°C and 33°C, with highs of up to 34°C on some days. Cooler temperatures of around 23°C can be anticipated on rainy days.

December Weather Recap
December 2022 was marked by short-duration heavy afternoon showers, occasionally extending into the evenings. Notably, a Sumatra squall on Dec 11 brought widespread rain, with 127.4mm recorded at West Coast Road, the highest daily total for the month.

Despite frequent rain, overall December rainfall was below average across much of Singapore. Sengkang East recorded the highest anomaly at 15% above average, while Jurong West saw a 49% below-average anomaly. Cooler conditions prevailed, with daily minimum temperatures under 24°C on most days, the lowest being 22.2°C in Jurong West on Dec 3.

Looking Ahead
Singaporeans can expect a mix of weather conditions as the north-east monsoon continues to influence the region, offering dry and windy days followed by afternoon storms in the weeks to come.
