Helping citizens access food and essentials amid the ongoing restrictions
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is actively assisting Singaporeans living in Shanghai as the city remains under strict lockdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak. In response to growing concerns, the Singapore Consulate-General in Shanghai has been proactively reaching out to citizens, offering support and guidance.
The Consulate-General’s assistance includes helping Singaporeans acquire essential supplies, such as food and medication. Those unable to procure necessities on their own are being sent food packages, while others are supported in securing exit permits to return to Singapore for urgent matters. Singaporeans in need of help with essential items are encouraged to contact the Consulate-General for assistance.
For those who can still access online delivery services, the MFA recommends using apps to purchase necessities and joining group buys within residential areas. In addition, residents are advised to approach their neighbourhood committees for further support.
The Consulate-General has been monitoring the situation closely and maintaining communication with local authorities, ensuring that Singaporeans are kept informed with regular updates. In addition to providing a list of Frequently Asked Questions, a virtual town hall meeting was held on April 12.
The MFA reminds citizens in Shanghai to e-register if they haven’t already done so and to reach out for consular support through the emergency hotline or email.
As the Covid-19 situation in Shanghai continues to unfold, frustration is growing among the 26 million residents, with many struggling to restock essential items as the lockdown drags on. The city has been under lockdown for over two weeks, making this the largest and most extensive lockdown since Wuhan in 2020.
