Singapore and Israel Forge AI Partnership to Drive Innovation

MOU Signed to Strengthen Cross-Border AI Collaboration

SINGAPORE: In a significant step toward fostering technological cooperation, Singapore and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on artificial intelligence (AI) on Monday (Mar 21). The agreement underscores both nations’ commitment to advancing AI development for mutual benefit.

Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, signed the agreement during his official visit to Israel with Orit Farkash-Hacohen, Israel’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology. The MOU formalises collaboration between Singapore’s Smart Nation and Digital Government Office and Israel’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Dr Balakrishnan reaffirmed the enduring partnership between Singapore and Israel, highlighting cooperation in technology, trade, research, and education. Both ministers welcomed expanded efforts in innovation, particularly in emerging fields such as agri-food tech, health-tech, AI, and digitalisation as global economies recover post-pandemic.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Singapore-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation, which has facilitated US$120 million in funding across 190 projects in information technology, electronics, and life sciences since 1997.

Growing Economic Partnerships
Israel remains a key economic partner for Singapore, ranking as its fourth-largest trading partner and foreign investor in the Middle East. With foreign direct investment reaching US$875 million, the two nations continue to explore opportunities for cross-border enterprise and innovation.

To further strengthen ties, Singapore announced the establishment of an embassy in Tel Aviv, aiming to support Singaporean businesses seeking partnerships in Israel’s thriving innovation sector.

Promoting Regional Stability
During discussions with Israel’s Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid, Dr Balakrishnan reiterated Singapore’s principled stance on a two-state solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict. Emphasising peace, security, and direct negotiations, he urged all parties to avoid unilateral actions that might heighten tensions.

Deepening Innovation Initiatives
Dr Balakrishnan’s visit included meetings with leaders from Israel’s technology ecosystem, such as investment platform OurCrowd. The engagements spotlight Israel’s growing role as a global technology hub and Singapore’s focus on nurturing collaborative R&D initiatives.

This milestone agreement signals a robust partnership in AI innovation, paving the way for deeper technological ties between two forward-thinking economies.
