Vietnam’s President to Embark on Historic Visit to Singapore

First State Visit Since Start of Pandemic Highlights Bilateral Ties

SINGAPORE: Vietnam’s President Nguyen Xuan Phuc is set to make an official state visit to Singapore from Feb. 24 to 26, marking the first such visit since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The visit comes at the invitation of Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Cooperation
During his visit, President Phuc will engage in high-level meetings with several Singaporean leaders, including President Halimah Yacob, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, and other parliamentarians.

On Feb. 25, a ceremonial welcome will be held at the Istana, followed by a formal meeting with President Halimah, who will also host a state banquet in President Phuc’s honour.

A key highlight of the trip will be the joint witnessing of bilateral agreements by President Phuc and Prime Minister Lee. These agreements aim to enhance cooperation across various sectors, reflecting the multifaceted partnership between the two nations.

Business Dialogue and Sustainable Development Tour
President Phuc will also address the Singapore-Vietnam Business Dialogue, co-organised by the Singapore Business Federation and Vietnam’s embassy. This event will bring together business leaders from both nations to explore opportunities for economic collaboration.

On his final day, President Phuc will visit the Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm, showcasing Singapore’s advancements in renewable energy, before concluding his trip.

Milestone in Bilateral Relations
This visit underscores the strong and enduring ties between Singapore and Vietnam, as both nations prepare to commemorate significant milestones in 2023: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership.

According to the MFA, “President Phuc’s state visit reaffirms the excellent relationship between Singapore and Vietnam, signalling a commitment to further collaboration in years to come.”

Accompanying President Phuc are his spouse, Mdm Tran Nguyet Thu, and a delegation comprising senior officials, ministers, and business representatives. This visit is expected to solidify the robust ties between the two nations and open new avenues for cooperation.
