Head coach’s future uncertain following remarkable semi-final run
Following Singapore’s valiant semi-final performance in the AFF Suzuki Cup against Indonesia on December 25, where they fought hard despite a 4-2 defeat, the national football team has garnered widespread admiration for their determination. The team’s spirit was praised by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and their head coach, Tatsuma Yoshida, who expressed immense pride in his players’ efforts.
Yoshida, who has led the Lions since May 2019, described the performance as the best since his tenure began. Despite the loss and several key players being sidelined due to red cards, the team’s relentless spirit impressed their coach. Yoshida remarked, “Even with the setbacks, we didn’t give up, and I was deeply moved by their fighting spirit.” He went on to express his pride in his team, emphasising the importance of their never-give-up mentality in advancing Singapore’s football.
While the team’s performance was the highlight, Yoshida himself has now become the subject of interest, receiving offers from clubs in Japan and another Asian country. One of the Japanese teams reaching out is Ventforet Kofu, where Yoshida previously coached in 2017. Despite these opportunities, Yoshida has been cautious about discussing his future, telling The Straits Times that he could not commit to anything at present. “I can’t say anything about my future right now,” Yoshida explained, adding that he had not yet discussed his situation with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).
Yoshida’s current contract with the Singapore national team is set to expire in December 2022, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his next steps.
