Johor-Singapore Land Travel Arrangement Expected to Begin Nov. 29

Border Travel for Long-Term Pass Holders and Workers to Resume Gradually

Malaysia’s Johor Chief Minister Hasni Mohammad stated that a land-based Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Johor and Singapore could commence on Nov. 29, 2021. This announcement, made on Nov. 18 during the opening ceremony of the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Desaru, Johor, highlights efforts to reconnect the two regions after prolonged travel restrictions.

Proposed Travel Details
According to Hasni, initial access via the land VTL would prioritise long-term pass holders and workers commuting between the two areas. The federal government is said to be reviewing arrangements similar to the existing air travel corridor between Changi Airport in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Singapore’s Position
The Singaporean Ministry of Trade and Industry acknowledged progress in negotiations for a land VTL but did not confirm Hasni’s proposed start date. A spokesperson emphasised the shared priority of reuniting families separated due to COVID-19.

Broader VTL Context
The announcement comes on the heels of a bilateral VTL agreement allowing quarantine-free air travel between Changi Airport and KLIA, set to begin on Nov. 29. This initial phase requires travellers to undergo COVID-19 testing in place of quarantine or Stay-Home Notices.

Further details on the land VTL are anticipated in the coming weeks as discussions progress, underscoring the importance of restoring connectivity and economic ties between Malaysia and Singapore.
