2,336 Emergency Incidents Handled via SCDF’s Community Response App in 2023

SCDF updates myResponder app to improve community emergency response capabilities

In 2023, community responders through the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s (SCDF) myResponder app attended to 2,336 emergency cases, playing a pivotal role in saving lives. Since its launch in 2015, the app has helped save over 40 lives, according to an SCDF spokesperson.

At the end of this year, the app will be updated with new features aimed at enhancing its functionality. The most notable update includes a wider alert radius, increasing from 400 metres to a maximum of 1.5 kilometres. Additionally, users will now have the option to choose their mode of response, either by foot or by vehicle. Another new feature is the introduction of a video call function, allowing the SCDF operations centre to view live footage of the emergency situation and provide real-time guidance on performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

The myResponder app is currently used by more than 130,000 registered community first responders, notifying them of emergencies such as cardiac arrests and small fires within their vicinity. The app’s “Call 995” feature also allows users to share their location, ensuring quicker deployment of emergency resources to the scene.

A Community Hero’s Story One of the many responders, 48-year-old Daniel Lim, helped save a life last May. While out for a regular walk, Lim received a notification about a cardiac arrest nearby. Using an automated external defibrillator (AED), he assisted in resuscitating the victim, who survived thanks to the combined efforts of Lim and the SCDF team. For his actions, Lim was honoured with a community award.

“The greatest satisfaction is knowing that I brought hope and smiles to the affected family,” Lim shared.

Future Enhancements SCDF’s Volunteer and Community Partnership Department Director, Wesley Lim, announced that the updated version of the app, myResponder 2.0, will roll out by the end of 2023. The expansion of the alert radius and the ability to select response modes will significantly enhance the app’s efficiency. The introduction of a video call function will allow SCDF to provide live instructions for performing CPR, improving the overall emergency response experience.

In addition, fire safety expert Mak Ka Weng, General Manager of Fiready, suggested further improvements, including audio prompts for step-by-step instructions on using fire extinguishers or AEDs during emergencies.

Expanded Fire Safety Initiatives Beyond the myResponder app, the Home Affairs Ministry has announced plans to install fire extinguishers at the ground floors of every two blocks of HDB flats, benefiting approximately 1.1 million households. These extinguishers will be maintained by the SCDF, and residents will be educated on their proper use through public engagement initiatives.
